comparing les revenants and humans.

WHAT MEDIA LANGUAGE IS ASSOCIATED WITH THIS PRODUCT? AND HOW DOES IT CREATE MULTIPLE MEANINGS?

  • purpose of media language
  • plysemy and multiple meanings
  • challenge ideology of humans
  • encoding and  decoding of meanings
  • target audience
  • key scenes

intro to les revenants

  • "camille" we dont know who she is- unconventional
  • wide establishing shot, panning up to the alps, foreign setting
  • sombre music before bus crash
  • see girls face cammile, she is the protagonist as we follow her but then she dies within the first few minutes, is unconventional.
  • relateable to many audiences as most children go on school trips
  • hermeneutic code
  • horror conventions as poeple scream and starts with death. static shot away from the action is unconventional, as many fast paced editing follows the action as death is extreme nd i this case chaotic.
  • confusing with the titles/ captions. "aujourd'hui" dosent give much referance to when the first scene happened if it wasnt present day.
  • intense non-diagetic music builds, increasing intensity and suspense.
  • butterfly can be a symbol of transformation and change, as well as being fragile and graceful so has multiple meanings.butterfly coming back to life is a signifier/ foreshadowing what is about to happen.
  • music is from mogwai- Scottish band, is niche
  • day and night, life and death, binary oppositions encode how we should think of life and death.

intro to humans

  • mechanical sounds, technology and futuristic.
  • metallic eyeball is symbolic of robots
  • clinical and scientific
  • naked which is stripped to its original state, underwear is all the same as they have no personality, feelings they are robots literally but also a code for being robotic and monotone
  • moonlight acts as a spotlight, highlights her as different from the rest.
  • panning shot of the warehouse line up with robots.
  • eerie, non- diegetic music as she looks up at the skylight. acts as a hermeneutic code as we wonder how she is "awake" and why she is looking at the moon, why is she the only one?
  • binary opposition of organic and synthetic life forms and material
  • shot of x-ray and robot hands, shoe they seem similar but also how two are binary opposites.
  • diegetic sound of interview, do you need extra help around the house, setting up the premise and reasons for these robots existing.
  •  blue-ish green colour, blue has connotations of technology and is associated with science. the green is symbollic of organic life e.g biology like plants and animals.
  • possible intertextual referance to black mirror
  •  shot of annita looking up and being awake is similar to the scene of butterfly breaking free from les revenants. one awake/alive next to the husks of the others.

media language is techniques that are used to encode meaning
