1. video textual analysis

Brent faiyaz- show you off                               https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IE2auM5W08E

context- brent faiyaz is a black, male R&B artist. this song was released 12 of march, amidst womens history month. the video talks about supporting and wanting to uplift women but specifically black women.

representation- the main social group we see in the video are black women with the one exception of on black man but his role is to comfort and support a women. we have a very wide representation within this social, varying from children to older generations, we see mothers, sisters, friends, family. one of the last scenes, brent stands with what we assume is his family, shows he stands with them, metaphorically, shows theyre united. however as he is stood at the front and most the family is behind and sat, could also be interpreted as him being the higher figure in the house. however he is greatly outnumbered, he is the minority. All the people are down to earth and humble, we don't see any celebrities apart from the artist, this means that the people in the video are relatable and help the audience identify with the people they are seeing, this is also why representation of other races or different social groups is important, so people especially younger audiences can see people like themselves in the media.

media language-

  • lexis (lyrics)-
  • mise-en-scene- the women are almost always very central in the scenes theyre in. reflecting that theyre the main focal point, the centre of attention in that moment and its about them. settings are also everyday settings such as bathrooms dinner tables, corner shops ect, further denoting that it is representing and praising your average black woman, not some celebrity that is more privileged and may not have had all of the same struggles.
  • the bandana can represent the patterns and colours f traditional African attire, is important as many African Americans don't know where they are from because of slavery so reclaiming these colours as their own gives a sense of who they are and community, gives a unifying factor back to African Americans.
  • many scenes have warm lighting, especially in the scenes in the home, this gives that warm feeling of comfort, security and love withing the family environment.
  • cinematography- longer shots, giving the people more attention instead of being in the background, gives them meaning. most shots move either closer or further from the person.
